Afghan Naan Bread/AFGHANISTAN

Ingredients

Four cups of all-purpose flour; 1.5 cups of warm water; 1 tsp of sugar; 2 tsp of active dry yeast; 1.5 tsp of salt; sesame seeds or poppy seeds for topping (optional)

Preparation and Cooking

  • This popular Afghan bread is prepared similar to the bread recipies given earlier.
  • Note that the dough in Afghan Nan is stretch into an oval shape and it is about 8mm thick. In addition, before baking, the top of each piece of dough is wet with a little water and is sprinkled with poppy seeds.
  • It is baked until it is puffed up and lightly browned.

Hints and Comments

  • A number of popular Afghan dishes can be cooked in the wood fired oven including kebabs, roasted vegetables, roast lamb and goat and ashak or mantu (which is dumpling and traditionally steamed).
